I really detest when my government puts me into a position where I am formed, by their actions, to come out in support of organizations (Meta, Facebook, etc) that I don't like, don't use, and rather despise otherwise.

Catching REAL criminals is hard work. It can also be quite dangerous, as the "real" big time criminals are likely armed... with REAL weapons, no less. And, they have this nasty tendency to USE said weapons when pressed too hard by LEO.
Then, on top of all that, "real" big time criminals probably know the legal system better than the judges or lawyers - and definitely better than the officers.
It' much easier (and safer) for the hard-working LDOs to manufacture your own custom crimes to prosecute. That way you can keep your arrest and conviction stats high without breaking a sweat!

Considering that the major purpose of "terrorists" is to force political/social change by threat of violence, the terrorists "won" the day DHS was created. Each time the Surveillance State escalates (in the name of terrorism), the terrorists laugh harder.
Cox lost their "Safe Harbors" status when they failed to "follow its own repeat infringer policy". Gonzales may have been a defacto ISP, but he did not have a repeat infringer policy to "fail to follow".

The more cynical of us could almost come to suspect that the "collateral damage" is really the hidden agenda here; a feature, not a bug! All they need is a vague sorta accusation that there is maybe infringement somewhere vaguely in the vicinity and the content they actually want gone is nuked... accidentally, of course.
