  • Why Big Companies Almost Never Notice Disruptive Innovation

    Joe ( profile ), 23 Aug, 2010 @ 05:13am

wish we could see this type of stuff in other fields

I know that we all know that the music industry is dead as we knew it, but it still manages to sue people trying to extract their middle man fee wherever they can.

The movie studios are still kicking, probably because they can adapt in mild fashions, but it would be nice if they didn't use lawsuits as a way of scaring off consumers and instead actually adapted their business model to fit the current day. Why not release movies for viewing online at a higher fee than going to theatres assuming at least 3 people will watch, so you charge 3 times the price? I'd pay $30 to watch a new release in my home with my kids, but do they let you? No!

Finally I would like to turn everyone's attention to TV, the model is dying, they had a good solution (hulu) then they decided to add a "Plus" model. Which is ok, but why not embrace what hulu is and maximize the targeting against M18-24, M25-34, and W 18-24, and W 25-34 and really use it along with their current upfront sales. They can sell the adspace two ways, one the old way and the other targeting the younger audiences via hulu. Offer highly competitive super demo targeted ad space with on demand viewing for the "harder" to reach target! But nope, what they do is lump all the content in a "channel" that they choose. Seems pretty stupid if you think about what they wasted.

Sorry for rambling, it is really early in the AM, but at least I can see how fubar the TV networks are.

    um...fired?

Shouldn't she get fired just because of how dumb this is? I know any PR is good PR but you would hope people would know enough about the issues to just elect someone they don't know. Granted I guess people don't know her well enough, just recognize the name...sad.

  • Google Street View Criticized For Showing 'Secret' SAS Base… That Has A Sign Viewable From The Street

    Joe ( profile ), 25 Mar, 2010 @ 01:47pm

yeah why add more publicity to this?

Wouldnt' they just ask Google to take a new street view picture and to schedule it so they can take down the sign when they do it? I think that would make more sense then throwing a hissy fit and letting everyone know about it.

  • What Kind Of Industry Sets Up A Group To Purposely Limit What Consumers Want? Apparently Hollywood

    Joe ( profile ), 23 Jan, 2010 @ 06:24pm

    I have an idea

How about this. The movie studios let consumers download part of a movie...and let them do it super easy. Lets say the first 20 minutes. Then after the consumer watches that 20 minutes they can decide if they want to buy it digitally, order it on DVD, or save it in their wishlist.

Also how about offering digital copies with all dvds instead of making a digital copy something that costs $5 extra which should just be free. Not even added value but if you own a movie you should own that movie no matter which screen you want to watch it on based on the quality edition that was purchased.

I know I went to far. I found a model that might actually make sense for the movie industry. I bet they call me some nasty names in the near future. Shame on me!

  • If School Officials Got Confused By Kid's Science Project, Why Does The Kid Need Counseling?

    Joe ( profile ), 19 Jan, 2010 @ 09:00am

    Yeah School officials need counseling

They obviously over reacted and are trying to CYA right now.

The family deserves an apology and the school official who flipped out should undergo stress management counseling and a 101 on technology course.

  • As Warner Music Collapses, Its Two Top Execs Got Paid $14 Million

    Re: Give it some time

The only time that this type of deal was ahead of it's time was about 5 years ago. If they did this in 2004 or 2005 then they were one of the first to do it. Now it's about 5 or 6 years too late to be considered ahead of it's time.

If anything they are way behind the curve.

  • TV Exec Upset When Daughter Doesn't Want To Bring TV To College

    Joe ( profile ), 05 Dec, 2009 @ 08:20pm

I think it depends on what she was talking about

Personally I couldn't live without my TV's. Don't get me wrong I love my laptop, and my PC monitor but watching TV or movies on them isn't all that great of an experience. Now before you go around thinking I watch cable know that I canceled my cable a year ago.

I have my PC hooked up to my 42" TV, and I have my xbox and wii on the other 40" TV. I don't pay for cable but I do watch Network TV that is free over the air. I typically use Netflix streaming and Hulu to watch the content I want.

I think cable TV is a rip off, I pay for cable internet and for a phone line through my cable operator. I see no value in doing the triple play again because the contract is only for a year and then i'm back to paying $65+ a month for 200+ channels I just don't give a rats bum about. I watch 4-6 channels, 3 of which I'm missing out on because all their content isn't available online how I want to view it. But i'll live.

Again I do see the value of owning a TV though (as long as it has an HDMI or VGA input that can work with my PC/Xbox/etc)

  • Dear Hollywood: Don't Be Idiots; Don't Delay Movie Rentals

    Joe ( profile ), 26 Oct, 2009 @ 12:28pm

    Why not offer the choices?

It would make sense to offer the consumers the option of how they want to view the content, especially now with all the newer ways one can go about viewing a movie. Maybe I want a DVD, maybe I want a digital download (PC or potable device viewing), maybe I want to stream it on my PC (same idea as a rental but streaming), maybe I want to go to the theatre with my wife for a date night.

Why not offer those options rather than clustering it into windows which does nothing except delay gratification in hopes that consumers purchase the movie on more than one window (which I probably still would).

  • What Kind Of Industry Sets Up A Group To Purposely Limit What Consumers Want? Apparently Hollywood

    Joe ( profile ), 17 Oct, 2009 @ 06:20am

    i got an idea

    1) Don't give up current model, but revise it to stop allowing technology to offer progression of new model
    2) Work to distribute movies digitally, remove over exerting DRM, allow users to plug in their own password and easily stream movie on 3-5 devices
    3) Start selling movies digitally, test out non DRM digital streams on older less profitable movies
    4) start selling all movies digitally and reap profits with realistic prices.

No more of oh we cut our distribution chain but we want more profits crap. Change digital movie prices with DRM to half that of traditional DVDs, give people an incentive to buy movies they want legally rather than bend them over to let them know you are screwing them.

  • Steve Ballmer Declares 'Free Is Not A Business Model' — Apparently Unfamiliar With Microsoft's Free Products

    Joe ( profile ), 07 Oct, 2009 @ 09:52pm

    xbox live...not free

Now I know Microsoft has a few free programs it offers along with windows given how bad of a rap windows has, but look at the xbox, nothing there is free, nada. They are consistantly trying to add value to the paid membership which makes the consumer pay to play games online with other paying consumers. Then look at their peripherals for the xbox, $100 for a wifi adapter? To add insult to injury its an a,b network adapter not even an N which is still a rip off at $100. Or their previous 20GB HDD for $100!

talk about completely out of whack pricing. They get paid on 3 ends with the xbox, 1) hardware/software sales, 2) xbox live memberships, and 3) advertisers who advertise to the customers paying for xbox live both in game and in the dashboard.

    undercover operation required?

Maybe they should send in someone from management, change their name ect and not let anyone know so they can figure out why everyone is so miserable. go up the line of command to see who is causing the excessive stress and fire whoever is causing the problems and work their way up to see who the trouble maker is.

  • Will People Pay CNN To Help Them Report The News?

    Joe ( profile ), 01 Oct, 2009 @ 08:08am

    i was excited...till i saw the price

I saw the app advertised on CNN and thought oh great another way to access CNN without typing it in my ipod touch browser. Then i clicked and saw the price and promptly closed itunes.

I don't know why I would pay for a CNN app. Like you said I have a web browser so I don't see why I'd pay for it.

  • Biologic Drugs Likely To Get Separate 12-Year Monopoly Protection Beyond Patents

    Joe ( profile ), 04 Aug, 2009 @ 10:06am

    Re: mike = clueless

You are clueless. I've worked on marketing for biologic pharmaceuticals. One has been on the market for the last 10 years, and still has a patent extending to 2017, that is just shy of 20 years of exclusivity for their drug before a generic can kick off.

Trust me with what they charge they have more than made their money back as well as paid for all the errors they made in the trial stages. Right now they could release a generic and overall that drug and all failed trials would still prove profitable...very profitable.

and this is going to help reform the cost of health care how?

I hope neither of these two congressmen/women get re-elected, this is just a shame. All this talk about reforming healthcare and somehow this law gets pushed through?

  • Media Consultant: Comments Are Bad, Please Shut Up

    Joe ( profile ), 17 Jul, 2009 @ 03:13pm

    duh

Often you will see media conglomerates run scared from building a community. If I look to CNN only a few articles offer the chance to submit comments...typically those are the better written articles. If an article is completely ridiculous you can only email the editor, not even the author, and finding that is often too hard to be worth while.

Offering minimal incentives will often help create a self regulating community. People build a reputation commenting in a site/forum/whatever they will often reach out to those who act foolish in hopes of being awarded some star by their name or something, or activity level. It isn't hard to build something along those lines...jut look at yahoo answers.

  • NPR Plays Spot The Healthcare Lobbyists At Healthcare Reform Hearing

    Joe ( profile ), 09 Jul, 2009 @ 05:59am

Why can't we just get rid of lobbyists again?

I never really cared for them, and it doesn't really make sense since it is pretty much just big business trying to have influence on government. Why not just outlaw lobbyists and change our legal system while we are at it.

Put in place a 3 strikes policy on frivolous lawsuits where if a lawyer takes a case that is considered to be a waste of the courts time 3 times they lose their license to practice for 3 years.

  • Can Someone Explain How Video Games Are Worse For Kids Than Plain TV?

    Joe ( profile ), 06 Jul, 2009 @ 04:36pm

    Re:

How did that work out for you?

I myself wasn't limited in my video game playing as long as I was doing well in school and did all my homework. Granted I was in a sport every season (3 per year) throughout highschool. So I was pretty busy, but I did get a decent amount of gaming in (when i was single) so overall I have no complaints.

The only limiting thing my parents did was refuse to buy me games that were in the news for being overly explicit, or if I already owned them they would take them away. That was annoying but not the end of the world. (like some kids tend to say in court when they lose their precious halo 3)

  • How Does Offering Free Content Insult Those Who Pay?

    Joe ( profile ), 05 Jul, 2009 @ 08:48am

um...why would you pay for cable now anyway?

I cancelled my Cable TV subscription back in November of last year. Transitioned to online video. Granted either a bunch of other people also shifted over or Cablevision is limiting my bandwidth because my service has gone to crap.

  • Cable Companies Aren't Immune From The Economy As More People Go Online-Only For TV

    Joe ( profile ), 01 Jun, 2009 @ 07:49am

I wrote in to adage about this in November 2008...

they laughed at me about the transition from TV to broadband TV, even though I noted it was mostly for the tech savvy group. Of course in April they did write an article about the trend, but no word about the fact that they have heard from people who have made the move themselves.

Only real problems with playing broadband video on your TV is that you will notice slowdown via the ISP, and broadband quality video doesn't always translate well on a 42" plasma.
