  • Samsung Routed In Apple Patent Fight; Told To Pay $1.05 Billion

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Difficulty comprehending large numbers

Nobody claimed "someone" that would imply a specific person. Generally speaking, the vast majority of humans living in America will NEVER have a shot at making $1 billion odd dollars, no matter what method they try. It takes a fucking shitton of money to make a billion dollars in the first place, whether it's running a business, or investing wisely. Anyone who makes a billion dollars in America starting at the median salary is an astronomically rare exception. Don't flatter your own intellectualism, because reality strongly suggests that these commenters are right, and that you're talking out your ass.

$47,619 odd dollars is damn close to the median of $45,018

On the wikipedia chart, there's 59,835,000 households below the bracket containing $47,619. There's 51,739,000 households above the bracket containing $47,619. Which means that $47,619 is off of the very center by 13%, which isn't enough to make a difference when talking about incomes amounting to $1billion dollars.

The second to the top bracket is $200,000 to $249,999 annually (the top bracket is >=$250,000), and at $249,999 annually it would take 4000.016 years to make a billion dollars. The sum of the brackets below >=$250,000 account for 98.5% of the households in the United states. In a sample of 100 households, you can expect about two of them to make $250,000 annually or more. That means 98.5% of the population can't expect to ever make anything even approaching 1 billion dollars in their whole lives.

You're argument is spurious at best, because it deals in rare exceptions to the rule, and even then, completely ignores the spirit of the OC's statement, you dick.

    Re: Re: Re:

That's because Google Translate "uses statistical models" to translate words and sentences from one language to another using datapoints gleaned from webpages. Or at least, that's the official explanation.

If that's true, then it simply doesn't take into account tenses, grammatical rules, or meaning (in any meaningful way (rimshot)).

If a page that is natively arabic also has a link to an english counterpart, google would just do a straight 1:1 word translation, not taking into account any grammatical structure.

That's how you get non-english pages translated into english looking like:

"In case dearth and said orifice no splyzna like, ontological right ovens."

They're so obvious and transparent that anyone who's fooled deserve it. It's essentially economic natural selection, and is essentially the same as buying "Fresh" seafood out of the back of a van in in rural Colorado.

Re: GPS vs. cell phone signal?

There is a third option, which is AGPS, which is quite common.

Most modern phones don't run standalone GPS by default, mainly because it takes a ton of processing to do it (relative to the capabilities of a cheap prepaid phone), and it also drains the battery.

Most phones use AGPS, which is sending the raw GPS receiver output from the phone to a cell tower, or nearby server that has some compute power, then sends the coordinates back to the phone.

They may not have needed to ping the phone at all. If Bigfoot used his GPS, it most likely sent his GPS data directly to the cell carrier which calculated his location, and was logged.

It pisses me off when people screw up things like loose/lose and wear/where/were/ware. If you have something you think is important to say, then take an extra second or two to make sure you say it intelligibly.

It's lazy and selfish not to use language correctly. It's lazy because it's easy, just read it out loud to yourself, and pay attention to your intention. It's selfish because what would take a minute or so for the writer to do once makes everyone who tries to read their writing stumble trying to read it. Your saving a minute costs the collective hours when added up.

Re: Thanks... I'm a cable cutter.

My theory is that most sports broadcasters, and most advertisers in the States know that their viewership doesn't pay very much attention during any given game. Given that knowledge, the broadcasters have to push a lot more ads, in order to make up for the unfocused eyeball factor of the majority of sports viewers.

  • Social Shaming Works Faster Than Legal Recourse

    LDoBe ( profile ), 10 Aug, 2012 @ 11:03am

Re: Re: Well why hasn't shaming worked for the RIAA and the MPAA?

Shame also requires that the one doing the shaming be credible to the one being shamed. If the shame-ee (new word?) doesn't care what the shamer says, and feels that the shamer is just a blowhard douchebag, the shame-ee doesn't feel shamed at all.

Guilt on the other hand doesn't require anyone to tell the guilty to feel guilty at all. Guilt is intrinsic to the one who committed an act they feel is wrong, and therefore the VAST majority of millennials will NEVER feel guilty about illegal downloads, and they most likely will never feel shame, because they don't feel that the MPAA or the RIAA are credible, or have any moral high ground whatsoever.

They'll just ignore it, and the DoJ will say: "shape up or will get very mad at you."

The TSA will ignore that, cycle repeats, DoJ does nothing as it's full of toothless cowards who aren't willing to arrest relevant assholes who ignore the court.

If I am ordered to appear before the court and ignore it, I'll have a bench warrant for arrest in much shorter than a year.

Why does the TSA who are exposing people to radiation, and constantly violating peoples' civil and human rights get to be treated differently?
