  • Senator Wyden Puts Hold On Intelligence Authorization Act Over Free Speech Concerns

Re: Seeking more info is itself more interesting...

I find nothing of the sort. Maybe it is Google tweaking your results based on history? Are you using Chrome? Signed in to Google? Something similar? Lots of things "influence" your Google results. I wish they would provide a way to turn that off...

Doing a search on Google using "feinstein site:bestnettech.com" grabs me only one hit for this particular article in my first 50.

Then, I tried a search here without Javascript turned on. I got a significant number of results using both "feinstein" and the actual tag, "dianne feinstein". In fact, you could just scroll up and click on her name in the tags... And get a big ol' page of posts with her tagged in it.

So... I'd venture to say you've found nothing of interest, while many of us find Senator Wyden's defense of our rights from those that choose to see "boogeymen" that don't exist important.

  • DEA Gets Lawsuit Dismissed Because It Couldn't Cope With Two Terabytes Of Evidence

LOL. My NAS here at the house has 9TB of storage (4x3TB in RAID5). That's almost 25% of the DEA's storage.

My educated guess is that you could do a search on twitter for "lendink.com" and find a pretty good listing for the most part. Especially prior to the 6th.

    Re:

Satellite had a la carte programming for years with c-band, it failed. People wanted bundling because they got more for less.

I'm not sure that's why C-band failed. I'd be more apt to say that C-band failed due to the high cost and knowledge requirements of entry. Who wants to put an 8-foot dish, with a tri-axis alignment system on a concrete pad? How do you do that in your apartment? On top of all of that, you had to know how to program your receiver. And you could only watch what the expensive receiver was showing (negating multi-room, multi-channel viewing).

No... I'd say that "bundling" had nothing to do with the "failure" of C-band.

Re: We want HBO/Cinemax programming packages

On TimeWarner, the only requirement is that you have "digital service" which doesn't have a billion channels. then you can add premium stuff like HBO/Showtime/Cinemax a la carte... Not sure you have though, so if that's the case with your provider... They suck.

    Re:

Uhhh... The HBO network is one of the few services offered on an a la carte basis by just about every cable provider out there. Unless you're needing access to more than one premium network (like wanting both HBO and Showtime), it's cheaper to get just the one premium you want.

    Re: don't forget Customer Service

Would they get customer calls? Sure they would, especially on a Netflix-type streaming service. But... By bringing in a serious amount of money that they were previously losing, they could likely pay for that call center...

Another option is that they could work with Netflix (GASP!) and maybe license all of the HBO content to be streamed like on a 15 minute timeshift (show becomes available to stream 15 minutes after it starts to air for the first time), charge Netflix $6/month/actual subscriber, which Netflix would (or could) bump to $8. It could be an "add-on" service for Netflix (not something they currently have). You know... Like the a la carte we've been asking for from the cable and satellite industry for years!

Actually, I find it very hilarious, and snide, and think that the only way it could be any better is by having a dude holding up two middle fingers and saying "F U Lamar!"... But I don't think that would fly.

  • Canadian Politician Claims That Ripping A CD To Your iPod Is Like Buying Socks & Stealing Shoes To Go With Them

    Kingster ( profile ), 17 May, 2012 @ 04:44pm

The extension of the socks/shoes analogy...

Look, we members of the SMDA (Sock Manufacturers and Darners Association) need to feed our children. You need to understand that you can't wear just ANY sock with ANY shoe that you wish. When you buy a new pair of shoes, you must buy a new pair of socks specifically for those shoes. If you want to wear those socks with a different pair of shoes, you'll need to go buy a similar pair of socks. Socks may only be worn with the shoes that they are purchased for.

If we catch you sharing socks with someone else, or copying SMDA socks, we'll take you to court.

Beyond the voting, there's a lot of stuff that can be gleaned from the servers... In TF2, you could get some positive karma as a medic from healing a teammate while taking fire yourself. Or you could get it as a sniper for taking out an opponent getting ready to nail an engie while building. Reward TEAM players.

I run a sizeable (but now essentially useless) Unreal Tournament website (yes, some of us still play!), and we always found ways to award team players - defenders of flag carriers, as an example, so I know a thing or two about dealing with assholes in games, as well as great team players. Watch some recording of GOOD team players - and you'll see them help teammates that they don't know and have never played with before. It's cool, it's fun for both people, and should be rewarded.

Wanna be an asshat in game, the Goonswarm? Awesome. Since you're preventing people from enjoying a game, you're gonna pay full retail for the game, plus full retail for the voice pack. You've got 8000 karma from helping your teammates in TF2? You rock! You can convert that to a 50% off coupon.

  • Jonathan Coulton Destroys The Rationale Behind The Megaupload Seizure With A Single Tweet; Follows Up With Epic Blog Post

    Re:

Actually, that's a really shitty analogy. Megaupload wasn't a pawn shop. It was a storage place.

You can get a big storage unit, or a small unit. I can give a copy of the key to MY lock to anyone I choose. They can go get stuff out of it. They can give me a key to their lock. And while there may have been plenty of stolen items in the storage unit next to mine... I used mine for my own purposes - storing extra furniture, some old PCs, and a sweet ass '70 Hemi 'cuda. Douchenozzle government came in and seized the whole place, simply because the moron next to me was growing weed and storing stolen goods in his unit. I can't get my car back (worth way more than the weed and the stolen goods), and there seems to be no process for doing so.

  • GoDaddy Takes Down Entire Site Of Copyright Attorney/Photographer Over Bogus DMCA Claim

    Kingster ( profile ), 21 Nov, 2011 @ 10:04am

    Re:

As a small-time admin myself, I would probably attempt to (in)validate the claim. If I found that the claim was in fact correct, I would notify the site owner, while removing only the infringing content. Only as a VERY LAST RESORT (i.e., I could not determine a way to remove the infringing content from the filesystem), would I shut down the site.

But that's just me, and I don't have that many sites that I host.

OK, maybe not. But that's how I would implement it.
