  • City Pays $900k To Man Tortured Into Confessing Committing A Murder That Never Happened

    Keroberos ( profile ), 28 May, 2024 @ 08:02pm

Why would YOU put the credibility of sleazebags who have zero problem with lying to and torturing a suspect ahead of an innocent person who had done nothing wrong? I don't see anything brave or admirable about them.

  • FTC Finally Goes After Big Pharma And Its Fraudulent Orange Book Patent Listings

    Penalties

Probably not. At least not at the FTC level. It will probably need Justice Deportment(s) involvement to sue them for fraud. Which won't hurt those who benefited from it all that much. Any monetary penalty will just be paid for by increases in drug prices (or quietly forgiven after everyone stops looking).

Do I ever get a chance to look at what my kids are looking at online?

Yes Mr. Biden, yes I do. You see, I fully understood the dangers that may (and do) exist on the open internet, and took steps to mitigate them. I learned how the internet works, and how to set up my own DNS server that the traffic from all the devices in my control route their queries through. At any moment, I could with a few clicks, enable logging on that server to see what sites anyone using it are accessing (I don't currently do so as my kids are old enough and responsible enough to be afforded some privacy in their life). You see, I actually took the role as "parent" seriously, and taught my kids how to protect themselves from harm, but also gave myself the ability to be the parent and have the ability to check up on them (and teach them) if needed.

  • Trying To Monetize Bigots Is A Great Way To Go Broke

It's a classic case of projection. The only people who believe that trans people or drag queens are only doing it because they want to rape people and molest children are the ones who would be doing it themselves if they thought they could get away with it (or at least they fantasize about doing it).

  • Arkansas: No Need To Age Verify Kids Working In Meat Processing Plants, But We Must Age Verify Kids Online

    Problem Solving, Republican Style.

They're solving the problem of age violations in the workplace by making it no longer illegal to do. Next up is their plan to combat financial fraud by completely deregulating the markets. Go, go conservative progress.

You are absolutely correct. In a sane country, none of these obvious end runs around constitutionally protected rights would ever pass judicial review. Unfortunately, we no longer live in a sane country (did we ever?). Judges in this country, even though their rulings are supposed to be devoid of personal political beliefs, have shown multiple times (mostly from the right) that they are as partisan as any in our elected government. Even worse, at the highest levels of the judiciary, there's nothing to stop judges from being partisan -- the Supreme Court never bothered to create any form of punishment for ethics violations.

    Make up your minds please

Grandstanding politicians: "Evil social media is spying and collecting data on everyone. We have to stop them for our children's safety." Also grandstanding politicians: "We just enacted a law that will require social media to spy and collect data on everyone. This will make our children safe."

  • Elon’s New API Pricing Plan Seems Perfectly Designed… To Help Send More Users And Developers To Mastodon

    Keroberos ( profile ), 02 Feb, 2023 @ 12:29pm

Hey now, if driving away all the advertisers, users, and third party developers -- and completely destroying Twitter in the process gets rid of those pesky bots, it's a small price to pay. Our boy Elon (being such a big brain, smarty-pants, capable of playing 12D chess), must surely be working from home grand multi-step plan that will become crystal clear to us normies at some point. Right?

  • Oregon Supreme Court Applies SCOTUS Ruling Retroactively, Overturns All Non-Unanimous Jury Convictions

    Best State in the Union

Ehh... About 70/30. 70% the state is progressive and awesome (mostly in the higher population western part and cities), the other part is as conservative (and also as racist) as anywhere down south or in the Midwest. The parts east of the Cascade Mountains in both Oregon and Washington are more politically aligned with Idaho (pretty deep red) -- It's almost a different state.

But... But... There's No Systemic Racism In The US

Isn't it kind of weird that in a country where systemic racism doesn't exist (according to some very, very smart boys and girls who could never nor would never, ever lie about something oh so very important), we find the smoking howitzer of systemic racism that only now is finally is getting addressed.

  • Denuvo Returns To Block Some Nintedo Switch Games From PC Emulation

    Keroberos ( profile ), 31 Aug, 2022 @ 05:59am

    Switch Emulation Requirements

Some of your information is out of date regarding switch emulation on PC. It used to be difficult to get running and needed some beefy specs to work decently, but that has changed within the last six months or so. Valve's Steam Deck does a great job emulating Switch titles, and it's easy to get the emulator installed and configured. The Switch emulator has matured enough that it can run well on a potato -- The Steam Deck is a PC running a midrange AMD CPU with integrated graphics, and the Switch is essentially a 6-7 year old tablet so it's not particularly hard to emulate hardware wise. This is the reason Switch developers (and Nintendo) are crapping their pants about this. The only reason this probably wont be a big issue is the fact that the people most interested in emulating the Switch already have one, and the games to go with it (myself included), and are only interested in having all the games they already own on one portable platform. It's easier to lug around my Steam Deck where I can play almost anything, than grabbing whatever handheld console that I may or may not want at the time I start wanting to play.

  • Elon Musk Still Wants Everyone (Including The Judge) To Believe His Fight With Twitter Is About Spam. It’s Not

    Being Smart Isn't a Requirement.

I've never met the man, but the few times I've suffered through hearing him speak, I've never been struck with the idea that he was particularly smart. Intelligent, yes, in a precocious toddler sort of way, but not smart. Most of the things he's thought up seem like the daydream of a five-year old, intriguing, but vague, missing any of the complexities and a realistic view of the technical difficulties that a well thought out idea requires to bring to fruition. But in his line of work, his ideas don't need to be smart in a technical sense (or even particularly useful), they just need to be profitable.

  • The Moral Panic Is Spreading: Think Tank Proposes Banning Teens From Social Media; Texas Rep Promises To Intro Bill

    Keroberos ( profile ), 06 Jul, 2022 @ 01:42pm

That chart is meaningless. Instagram makes some teens feel worse about themselves. Compared to what? I'd be willing to bet that if you asked that same question of teens (or anyone, for that matter), but changed the word "Instagram" with any other place where they might interact with others (school, home, work, the mall, a party, just about anywhere), you'd get almost identical numbers. About half would say it had no effect, about a quarter would say it had a positive effect, and about a quarter would say it was negative. That chart has some variation, but for the most part looks like an almost normal distribution and actually skewed towards the positive instead of the negative.

"This just in. Researchers have just published a study showing that physical social interactions have a negative impact on the mental well being of minors. Several legislators have released statements announcing their plans to introduce bills banning all physical interactions between persons under the age of 18 (including family members). One has been quoted as saying, 'I always knew that this was harmful to children, but now that we have proof, we can take steps to insure our children are safely locked up in their rooms until they turn 18'. Stay tuned for more on this breaking story.

  • Nintendo's YouTube Video For Its Switch Online Upgrade Is Its Most Hated Video Ever

    Re:

GoldenEye would be nice, but I doubt it will ever happen with all the licensing and rights issues going on with that. Also if they don't fix the emulation issues, multiplayer (the only reason most would have to play it) would be a mess. I was somewhat excited for Ocarina of Time, But since I already own it on multiple platforms (N64, GameCube, 3DS), I'll just wait until I get my Steam Deck and play it in an emulator.

This is a stupid idea that needs to be taken out to a deserted field in the middle of nowhere, beaten to death with a baseball bat, buried in a shallow grave, and never spoken of again. If implemented it will not end well. In repressive regimes it will be cracking down on anti-government materials, here in the US it will be tracking down those pesky terrorists, and everywhere will have copyright holders needing to protect their precious, precious intellectual property.

  • The Rule Of Fences, And Why Congress Needs To Temper Its Appetite To Undermine Internet Service Provider Liability Protection

    Keroberos ( profile ), 29 Sep, 2021 @ 08:58am

    An incorrect assumption.

The author is assuming that lawmakers don't know what the section 230 fence is keeping out. This is incorrect-- they absolutely do know-- they just want to be able to force service providers to either take down content they don't like or leave up content that they do in violation of the 1st amendment.
