Step 1: read the initial state
Step 2: use the disc on a console
Step 3: when you want to resell it, revert it to its original state. It'll be as good as new.

It took me all of 5 minutes to think of a way around that. The only way to permanently do this is to fill half of the disc only, on first run make the console make an encrypted copy of the disc on the empty half, and completely write the initial half with 1s after making sure you can decrypt the other half.

Should I file a patent so nobody can ever do anything with this evil, evil idea of mine?

It's possible that it could still be free. Know that video calls take up a lot of data very fast, and there are plenty of AT&T iPhone users who have the 200MB data plan (since it is cheap). I'm hoping they are just using that as a 'safety' switch so you don't end up with an asston of overage fees from one day of using FaceTime over cellular data.

However, they could very well do this and keep most customers. As an AT&T customer, I know they use some dirty tricks to keep you on their network. Their contracts last 2 years, and they offer discounted upgrades after 18 months into a contract if you renew your contract (you can get a 16gb iPhone of the latest generation for $200, and many phones for free). So for 6 months, you get to contemplate getting a shiny new phone, staying strong and waiting for your contract to expire (they often give you deeper discounts if you try this), or a $400 contract termination fee. Considering how the iPhone 5 is supposed to release with iOS 6, a lot of people will just go for the upgrade.

However, last time I checked, AT&T has no service to compete with FaceTime, so they're really shooting themselves in the foot if they actually plan to charge for it.

And yes, they do charge for tethering. However, it's not too hard to jailbreak and get free tethering. They can't catch you. Paid FaceTime usage would also be easily circumvented. Hell, there are already things that let you do FaceTime over 3G.

Everyone has their preference. I prefer a well-integrated set of features that feels complete. You might prefer the customizability and openness of Android, and that's just fine.

    Re: Re:

I'd also like to mention that iTunes received an update containing references to what would be the iPhone some time in September of 2006. The LG Prada was first announced on December 12, 2006. Now, unless Apple's Time Machine backup drive has some interesting hidden features, I don't think they copied it. In fact, the iPhone has been in development since 2005 at least.

Just because the phones ended up looking alike doesn't mean a thing. It's called 'convergent evolution'. Sharks and dolphins look alike, but they are clearly different. The sharks aren't suing the dolphins over copying their design.

"A nice way to describe you got to pay Apple top dollar cause you can't relace it yourself. Fanboy, indeed."
Does it really matter if I don't have to replace the battery?

As for that link, those people seem to act like Apple is the only company to ever do things like that. Apple is not the only company to ever misuse the patent system. Ever heard of the Bethesda Game Studios vs. Mojang AB case? Not only does that show that others make bullshit patent cases, but it also shows that we should really be mad at the lawyers instead.

    Re: Re:

I did not say that it was a feature. I said that managing two separate storage devices on a phone does not come without its disadvantages. There is no way to get a microSD card and onboard flash storage to work seamlessly together. If you tried to emulate a RAID 0, the speed would always be that of the microSD card. If you let them behave separately, certain files would load slower and it'd be harder to fit several large files on the phone if they didn't fit nicely. Most users don't want to deal with this kind of crap. Apple does allow you to bring your phone in within 30 days to upgrade to one with more storage capacity if you find it to be insufficient, so it's not like you never get a chance once you buy a phone.

I also feel that I must ask exactly how much porn you are trying to store on your phone.

If you were an Apple fanboy, you'd understand.

    For those who are not:
Apple focuses a lot on simplicity. On most phones you'll find about 50 buttons and ports and slots all around the edges of the phone. On the iPhone, there's only 4 buttons total, 2 ports, and one switch. The SIM card slot is placed in such a way that it is flush with the edge of the phone. Why? Because that's all you need. You usually only need to put in the SIM card once (or never if on Verizon) so it is tucked out of the way. They put in a good battery, so they put that out of the way as well. There is no microSD slot since managing flash storage on a phone can be a hassle, so they made that not a problem (and you should be able to fit plenty on a 32 GB iphone, I couldn't imagine coming close to filling a 64 GB one).
On the iPad, there are also only 4 buttons (1 on front), 1 switch, a headphone jack and a dock connector. The iPad is also designed in such a way that the buttons on the side aren't visible from the front so they aren't distracting you. There's also no prominently displayed Apple logo on the front like on the Galaxy Tab.
The operating system also exhibits the simplicity that Apple strives for. I've looked at Android tablets before. When I see the home screen on them, the first word that comes to mind is cluttered. Everything is really crammed together and, in my opinion, that makes it harder to use. One advantage of Android is that it is more customizable, however, this comes at the cost of compatibility issues arising. For iOS apps, apps either work or they don't for a specific device/OS version. For Android apps, developers would have to make apps that work on several resolutions, several hardware configurations, and several devices. As a person who has a custom gaming rig that is better than the computer of most people I know, Android looks a lot like development hell. Apple has a lot of consistency, so I don't have to change the layout of my applications much when the iPad 8 comes out boasting a 4096x3072 screen resolution.

I might also want to mention that everyone immediately started copying the iPhone as soon as it came out, but I have a feeling I'd lose that debate horribly on here... I'll drop this image here anyway...
    http://www.idrugged.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/befroe-and-after-iphone.jpg
To be honest, if everyone blatantly copied my design like that and fucked up the simplicity at the core like that, I'd want to sue everyone too.

Yes, a whole 40 of them! That's a lot of 'christians'!

Seriously, don't bring them up in a religious argument. Even the KKK and Jerry Falwell hate(d) them.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 2 rules to be an atheist

I may have not broken this down as much as I should have:

"as i have said, you appear incapable of rational discourse untainted by your received catechism; locked in an authoritarian mode that brooks no logical assault on your beliefs..."

What logical assault? This whole debate is a turd-throwing contest! There is no logic here!

telling a person who lacks awareness of a new concept is at least possible; but a person who simply refuses to acknowledge the validity of a concept because it will conflict with their 'faith' (*snicker*), is impossible to reason with...
(Hint: the problem is that pesky word 'reason'; so-called 'faith' allows for no reason...)"

I can see where people could fit in modern science in with religion. However, you have to consider the amount of SYMBOLISM in the Bible. Ever heard of symbolism? Or did you sleep through your english classes? As for things that are impossible to reason with, ever listened to yourself?

    "*sigh*"

This is what I do when I read anything you write. Usually accompanied with facepalm.

"i mean, FORGET about even having a meta-conversation about you (AND your ilk) continuously BITCHING about 'everyone' 'attacking' you by name-calling... (*gasp* it is -like- the *worst*, it makes me sniffle and cry...)
...you just come back with your childish bullshit:
'mommy, that mean man said bad words, he must not know anything...'
what an "argument"... works every time, huh, xtian ?"

So that means I can namecall too? Okay! Dickweed.

"(seriously, i'm embarrassed for you: you either do not notice, or are pointedly ignoring the multiple 'whooshes' that go over your head...)"

Yeah, there's a lot of hot air coming out of you guys.

"*and* -regardless of YOUR 'faith'- many -if not most- of your xtian brothers and sisters have NO problem with: 'he is not of our 'faith', therefore evil, therefore it is not only 'good' that we kill him, but our God commands us to do so !'"

Seems like you'd think so, since you lack any tolerance at all.

"oh ? you say you're not *that* fundie ? you're not *that* old testament ? you're one of them-there hippie-jesus, new testament type xtians ?
    sure you are...
when/if those faux-moral bastards enforced a theocracy, i KNOW EXACTLY whose side you are on, i don't give a crap what lies you tell yourself and us..."

Then why don't you tell us that we are all atheists? That might help your cause more.

"sanctimonious xtians bitching about how they are repressed and 'persecuted' ? yeah, what's not to love about that hypocritical crybabying..."

Examples please? I don't hear this happening often, I'd like to see.

"tell me, xtian, how many atheist channels are there on tee vee ? (and -no- the cartoon channel doesn't count) how many religious/xtian channels ?
tell me, how many xtian radio stations can you tune in where you're at ? i know where i live, its approximately a million; but, so far, i ain't found ONE atheist station..."

Maybe nobody wants to hear some asshole bitching about everyone else's religion?

"uh huh, yo' sho' is persecuted..."

Doubling down on baseless arguments? Seriously?

"um,*HOW MANY* politicians 'come out' as atheists again ? could you run those numbers down for me ? ? ? ...and, um, HOW MANY politicians profess to be religious/xtian ?
here, i'll tell you that one: approximately 100%, minus about a handful in the whole stupid country..."

Maybe look up some statistics for once in your entire goddamn life: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_the_United_States#Statistics

"wow, that sho' is some upside-down persecution there, bible boy..."

That's because you're pulling everything out of your ass except your head.

"i'm wondering, in your neck of the woods, if you told everyone you were xtian, would they even bat an eyelash ?
is it something they just assumed ? or possibly not even an issue of any significance ? ...possibly ?
i'm betting that is the experience of 99.99% of amerikans..."

78.4% are christians. Anyway, what the hell does this have to do with anything? Atheists are a minority, get over it. And you certainly won't be recruiting anyone to your cause like that.

"there's no stupid fucking crybaby xtians being 'persecuted' in amerika, THEY are doing whatever persecution is being done to people..."

    http://www.nizkor.org/features/fallacies/false-dilemma.html
(I recommend you use this site, I find it useful in thoroughly tearing apart your 'arguments'. Not that the fallacy here matters since you have no proof for any of your claims.)

"stay in your stupid god-house and get fleeced by your stupid church 'fathers', what the fuck to i care; but start imposing your stupid skydaddy myths on me through the laws/gummint, and i will kick your stupid ass straight to whatever hell you believe in..."

Feel lucky that you aren't in 16th century England getting your head cut off for saying that. And would you kindly actually be tolerant of others religion, instead of being openly hostile? I'm not bitching at you for outright denying the existence of a deity without proof, I'm only bitching at you for being a jackass and not having the social skills to carry on a debate with valid arguments that are thought-provoking, are backed up with evidence, and make sense. In your current state, you are no better than these 'christians' you complain about. Now, with all due respect (and intended pun)...
    Go to hell.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 2 rules to be an atheist

"And a lot of christians belong to groups like the Westboro baptist church: i.e not nice people"
That is the most ignorant comment I have ever seen. I can say with confidence that even christians hate them. They put a bad image on the face of christians. Might I mention that they are all lawyers and might as well be copyright trolls with all the legal shit they try to pull? They also have a population of 40. I am struggling to understand what you mean by a lot of christians, but I think you probably mean a 'lot' of 'christians'. But seriously, even the fucking KKK said they were hatemongers. And Jerry Falwell. You can't just assume that everyone is a Westboro Baptist Church nutcase.

And art guerilla, as for your rant...
I am AGNOSTIC. It means that I believe in the values of the Bible (ie. the 'moral' to the story) and practice tolerance towards people of other religious groups, and I celebrate Christmas and related holidays (maybe that's why you guys are so cranky all the time...) Or you could say I'm half-atheist and half-christian.

    The breakdown:
"as i have said, you appear incapable of rational discourse untainted by your received catechism; locked in an authoritarian mode that brooks no logical assault on your beliefs...
telling a person who lacks awareness of a new concept is at least possible; but a person who simply refuses to acknowledge the validity of a concept because it will conflict with their 'faith' (*snicker*), is impossible to reason with...

Special pleading much? I agree with you. What an 'argument'.

"*and* -regardless of YOUR 'faith'- many -if not most- of your xtian brothers and sisters have NO problem with: 'he is not of our 'faith', therefore evil, therefore it is not only 'good' that we kill him, but our God commands us to do so !'"

Stereotyping. Strawman. Could you put some evidence behind your claims next time? Debates aren't fun when they are pure bullshit.

Ok, this is where your rant went straight to hell (no pun intended). I have no fucking clue what you are trying to say.

Now, let's see how long it takes for people to not read anything I said but still be able to make a 'logical' (and I say that with massive sarcasm quotes) rebuttal.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 2 rules to be an atheist

"Religion is like a penis. It's fine if you have one, its fine if you're proud of it, but please don't whip it out in public and wave it around, and please don't try to shove it down children's throats."

    Look familiar?
Think of atheism as a religion in this case (I know it's a lack of religion). By making that poster, wasn't that guy doing what this quote says NOT to do? You are only stereotyping. I'm agnostic, so I understand both sides of the issue very well. And, to be honest, I'm having a lot of trouble sympathizing with you guys, since it's clear you lack any social skills and only care about being right.

A lot of christians are nice people once you get to know them. If you could actually practice tolerance once in a while, (i.e. shut your goddamn mouth and stop bitching whenever someone says God) then you might have more success in forming relationships with people who have a religion.

Re: Of course it's effective-- you just don't like any enforcement

Your comment only shows ignorance. I've pirated lots of video games. Yet somehow, the price of all of the games I own totals to about $700. That $700 would have never been spent had I never pirated anything. Hell, I'd still be a console gamer. I started by pirating Garry's Mod. Then I pirated most games made by Valve. I played them for a while, I really liked them. Then I saw a retail copy of Counter Strike: Source at Walmart. That's when I decided to go legit. By the end of that year, I had bought everything I had pirated. I also bought Portal 2 when it came out, which I would have never heard of, much less bought, had I not pirated anything. At one time I also pirated TES IV: Oblivion. That led to me purchasing that. I also purchased Fallout: NV and all its DLC, I bought Fallout 3, and I bought Skyrim. I also plan to buy its DLC when they end their stupid timed exclusive. If I never pirated Oblivion, however, I might have not bought any of this. Because of the fact that my piracy has led to me buying twice as much to support the game developers, I am not ashamed of being a pirate.

Re: Re: Re: But will the computers be put in jail for theft?

Bob, what I've learned from over a decade of working with computers is that unless they're broken, they only do what you tell them to. If you tell them to 'index web pages' they'll index web pages. If you tell them to 'not index torrent sites', it doesn't know what a torrent site is necessarily, so it might end up doing something stupid like blocking every website that has a .torrent file or a magnet link, even if it is legal. And some sites have a mixture of legal and illegal content, which means the whole site isn't in need of censoring (Search for 'ubuntu' on TPB). This is why we have a takedown system. Google can't account for everything it indexes, and if they handpicked things to appear in results, it'd be impossible to use the search service since there wouldn't be anything to search for. The takedown system is for telling Google that something it indexed infringes on copyright or is illegal in some other way so they can correct their error (which is bound to happen with how many things are indexed). However, some people find it necessary to abuse the takedown system to further their personal interests:
    http://www.google.com/transparencyreport/removals/government/
As for your point about drug trafficking, do we sue gun manufacturers when someone uses one of their products to murder someone?
As for counterfeit goods, you are equating 'counterfeit' with 'steal'. Stealing is going into a clothing store and taking everything and running. Counterfeiting is making a (often cheap, poor quality) fabrication of the item.

I must admit, bob, you'd make a great cult leader some day.

  • Jun 22, 2012 @ 10:20am

Re: But will the computers be put in jail for theft?

Of course Big Search wants to have its cake and eat it too. When the huge computer system spins out answers and people complain about them, Big Search wants to claim that it's a protected opinion, as carefully crafted as Martin Luther King's speech.

    Strawman, and poisoning the well.
But how does Big Search feel when its computers infringe upon copyright, help people buy illegal drugs, spy on citizens or just about anything else? Oh, well, that was just a mistake. Computers can't be expected to be responsible for these things. They can't be responsible because they're just dumb computers.

    Strawman, and poisoning the well
If Big Search wants to hide behind the First Amendment when issuing its search rankings

Strawman, and poisoning the well. I'll stop here since we both know what my criticisms of everything else will be.

Note that anyone can make a website that is indexed by Google. It'd be impossible to moderate every search result. Even if you tried to automate the process, it'd result in too many false positives. Then we consider the fact that torrents have legal uses as a method to download large files while minimizing load on the server (for example, Ubuntu offers torrent downloads of its install discs, in fact I am seeding one right now). And what good would censoring search results do anyway? People would just sigh and go directly to their torrent site. The Pirate Bay even said they'll get more traffic due to it being removed from search results.

  • Jun 18, 2012 @ 10:33pm

This guy needs to learn that it takes two copies to make a backup. If the hard drive containing the only copy of something fails it's your own damn fault, and not an excuse to sue Apple for enough money for 100 replacements.
