I've seen this happen before on the peoples court (a couple times actually). While the show doesn't have very many lawyers, when they do have them, they lose about as often as they win (it seems the judge doesn't seem to like lawyers very much).
Another excellent article.
"but I think a short grace period might be OK in this case"
I think the word "short" might end up getting stretched to like 20 years. After all, the constitution uses the term "limited time" and that gets stretched to mean "forever minus one day."
"Ummm.. The Pirate Bay is not based in the States, it's in Sweden."
I know.
""This nation...," you mean the United States, then this nation does not favor corporations over the people. Greedy jackasses do."
I don't disagree, I was referring to those in charge of this nation I suppose. I should have been more specific.
Yet Bayer gets away with KNOWINGLY selling Aids tainted blood ...
Bayer knowingly sold Aids Tainted Blood overseas, Merck hid information on Viox and that scandal was responsible for killing many people, IG Farben was responsible for war crimes ( Only in the case of Auschwitz, where IG Farben had constructed a plant next to the concentration camp with the clear intent to utilize inmates as slave workers, did the tribunal consider the evidence sufficient to prove that IG Farben acted on their own initiative. ).

I don't think you really get worse than that. Nice try though.
Nothing good has come out of the Internet yet he and his family have the Internet. That's hypocrisy as well. It's good for him and his family but not good for everyone else.
"while fining the four defendants and giving them jail time"
Yet Bayer gets away with selling Aids tainted blood (and the FDA allowed it) and NO ONE goes to jail. This nation is in favor of rich and powerful corporations over that of the interests of the people.
They should be able to sue and be compensated for damages.
I am not confused. I know the difference between copyrights, patents, trade secrets, etc...
"and those folks rarely get credit for providing the info that makes the journalistic effort possible. "
(sorry for stating the obvious again) but that's often because they don't want to receive credit. If they do, there will likely be consequences (ie: lose job under some other pretext, treated unfairly, discriminated against, mistreated by other employees, etc...).
"Newspapers are dropping like rocks, magazines are disappearing"
These methods of communication are becoming obsolete. Just like tape players got replaced by CD's, Lan lines get replaced by cell phones, etc... Technology advances. We have a more efficient, cheaper method of distributing news that doesn't cost us paper (and trees). It's good for us and good for the environment (cutting down trees is bad for the environment and it requires more energy than sending info through the Internet). Sure, it's bad for legacy companies but we shouldn't hold back progress just because they don't want to adapt to the new environment.
What did this kid do, did he build a program that runs in a dos box just to send a hoax e - mail? I really have to give him credit for doing all that, though I never would have thought such effort was necessary.
Wow, so I can use a Dos box to send spam E - Mails and hide my activity more efficiently than using other means? I never knew this. To think that command line interfaces were such an ideal means of doing such things never crossed my mind.
"Sony, number three on the Top Ten Most Evil Companies Ever"
Not even close. I would start with Monsanto and move on to pharmaceutical corporations?
"In my own household I know it is my responsibility, along with my wife, to monitor how my family uses the Internet for school work and enjoyment."
So you do have the Internet at your house yet you still claim that it causes more harm than good? The hypocrisy. Why would your purposefully introduce something into your household that you believe causes more harm than good? It's OK for you to benefit from it but not for others?
Excellent critique Mike Masnick. Excellent, I could not have done better. The sentences were so nicely set up that I could predict what you were going to say next based on the previous sentence (ie: the next sentence is obvious and it's going to HURT). Perhaps people should boycott Sony until this guy gets fired (with NO compensation or retirement or any of that nonsense).
I think google has something where they try to give away a free Internet connection to anyone without an Internet connection. I think they even tried to offer free wireless Internet to people in many areas (but ISP's I suppose don't like it) but they do in very specific areas (I think their home town or something).
So, has anyone won this contest yet?
"Not once since the inception of newspaper, radio, or television--nobody EVER thought of a way to get somebody else to cover costs."
Yes they have. Just get the government to do it (ie: bail outs).
