Truly Unhinged: Trump Suggests Rob Reiner Had It Coming For Criticizing Him

from the how-is-this-happening? dept

When Hollywood legend Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner were murdered Sunday evening—allegedly by their son, who was arrested—you might (had you been living in another time with a different President) have expected the President of the United States to either stay silent or offer condolences.

Instead, Donald Trump saw an opportunity to demonstrate to the world—yet again—how truly depraved and obsessed he is.

That’s Trump on Truth Social saying:

A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood. Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS. He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before. May Rob and Michele rest in peace!

Read that again. The President of the United States is claiming—with zero evidence—that Reiner’s murder happened “due to the anger he caused others” through his criticism of Trump. He’s framing political speech against Trump as something that drives people “crazy” and justifies violence.

This is the same administration that spent months after Charlie Kirk’s death insisting that even quoting Kirk’s own hateful rhetoric was unacceptable and deserving of cancellation. Pam Bondi threatened to prosecute those who criticized Kirk, claiming it incited violence. There was a flood of think pieces demanding we “turn down the rhetoric” even as MAGA immediately ramped up “the war on the left” in Kirk’s name.

But when someone who spent decades speaking out against fascism—Rob Reiner, beloved for his work on All in the Family and for directing genre-defining films, a key player in legalizing same-sex marriage, someone whose empathy and kindness touched countless lives—is murdered? Trump claims Reiner basically had it coming because his anti-Trump activism drove people “crazy.”

Trump is mad because Reiner has been a loud, consistent, and vocal critic of the President, highlighting the many ways in which Donald Trump is unfit for office. And Trump’s obsession with that criticism is the only thing in this story that’s truly “crazy.”

The message from Trump is clear: criticizing Trump is what causes violence. Supporting Trump justifies it.

And much of the media is just letting it slide by, “reporting the facts” of what Trump said, rather than just how unhinged it is:

Thankfully, at least some in the media are calling out how ridiculous and unhinged this is, but the rush to try to normalize Trump’s rhetoric is dangerous. The underlying point remains the same: Trump just told everyone, from the Oval Office, that a murdered man basically had it coming for criticizing him too much.

Add to this Trump’s pardoning of all the January 6th criminals, the ramping up of violence by ICE and CBP in cities, and the non-stop hateful rhetoric, and Donald Trump is making it clear: violence in support of Donald Trump is noble.

And that’s fucking crazy.

The only consistency with Donald Trump is that if you support Trump, you can be as violent as you want.

Making himself the center of attention.

4547 is doing everything he can to make himself the center of attention, to further grant himself more power while demeaning people that show more humanity and compassion than he does. The tactic that many an autocrat has done in history. The one lesson that 77 million in the US willfully ignored on November 4th, 2024, and has proven to be higher in cost than eggs in the supermarket.

I know it’s bullshit to do this sort of thing, and I really do try to stop myself from doing it these days—but I feel that it’s necessary in this specific moment.

Hey, all you shithead pro-Trump trolls out there: I’m begging all of you to find both your balls and some sincerity before you try to defend the idea that Donald Trump’s critics deserve to be murdered only and specifically because they’re critics of Donald Trump.

I’ll wait.

Justification Of Murdering Trump's Opponents

As the article says the American president is justifying the murder of his opponents by his supporters. This adds to the evidence that Trump intends creating a MAGA dicatorship. Rob Reiner in October said:
“Make no mistake; we have a year before this country becomes a full-on autocracy, and democracy completely leaves us,” Reiner said in that interview….“And we’re looking at the election in 2026, and Donald Trump knows that in a free and fair election, he will lose,” Reiner said. “He will lose the House, the House will flip and will become in Democratic hands. There will be committee chairs who will be able to hold meetings, and this is the last thing he wants.”

I used to say the news media were stenographers.

Now I wish they were stenographers. At least stenographers would accurately report Trump’s words.

Our news media are reputation managers: they sanewash Trump’s incoherence and cruelty to make them sound rational and respectable.

David says:

Re: Interestingly

this one is too big even for Fox to attempt sanewashing on. Their headline is “GOP leaders call Reiner family slayings a ‘tragedy’ as director’s son detained in homicide probe
Thune, Johnson offer condolences after director Rob Reiner and his wife were found stabbed to death”.

No mention of Trump in this article or anywhere else in that context either: apparently he is not counted as GOP leader when inconvenient.

Re: Re:

Look. Someone in my house has evening news (multiple local, one national network) on every single day. They regularly skip over full quotes of anyone in the administration, and the stenography bit takes care of what they did choose to report or paraphrase. The latter being full avoidance of any implication that things happening are wrong or illegal or just insanely stupid. So much so that when, finally, they question something, or actually report on other people questioning, correcting, or condemning anything at all, it now comes as a shocking surprise to me.

That’s anecdata, but you asked. i am sure you can find studies, preliminary studies, and reasonably collected data publicly available.

Drew Wilson (user link) says:

I have to admit, it is really refreshing to see others point out just how badly so many media members are dropping the ball at basic levels of journalism. I’ve pointed out their flaws before and even expressed frustration with what numerous media outlets are doing and I get push back from some with them saying that I’m being mean for pointing out the flaws of their reporting and that I a “too hard on them”. I’m not mad at them because I don’t personally like the media, I’m mad at them for persistent failings like the one you highlighted here.

In this case, this is yet another sane washing effort on the part of media outlets – the very kinds of things they have a history of denying is even a thing.

Anyway, the media absolutely deserves to get called out whenever they pull stunts like this. I’m also very happy I’m not the only one doing this these days.
