Bari Weiss Gets To Work ‘Fixing’ CBS ‘Bias’ — By Making It More Biased

from the fixing-bias-with-more-bias dept

For more than fifty years the U.S. right wing has embraced a neat trick: by claiming that literally anything in factual opposition to their beliefs is “biased” and therefore must be discarded as unreliable, they’ve bullied U.S. media into becoming a feckless mess terrified of accusations of “liberal bias.”

Of course, if you ask the actual media academics who study U.S. media bias, they’ll quickly tell you that the U.S. media generally veers toward center-right corporatism because we’ve let it consolidate at the hands of center-right billionaires. The obvious result is a hot feckless mess that lacks the courage to speak truth to power, something that became obvious to even the most obtuse with the rise of U.S. authoritarianism.

Still, this idea that the U.S. media is “too woke” and “has a liberal bias” is central to the generational Republican mission of creating a press that only exists to make affluent Conservatives happy.

Enter the billionaire Ellison family, who recently announced that they’re hiring right wing engagement troll Bari Weiss to run whatever is left of CBS News after its disastrous and utterly feckless capitulation to the Trump administration. The $150 million purchase of Weiss’ weird, trolling blog is part of a massive Ellison family acquisition spree aimed at dominating what’s left of U.S. media and making it even friendlier to the exact people who’ve long ruined it.

Ellison’s clearly using Weiss as a prop to turn CBS into yet another hollow right wing propaganda mill tasked with blowing smoke up the ass of Netanyahu and Trumpism. So of course Weiss’ first day at CBS News involved asking 60 Minutes (or whoever still works there) why they’re so “biased”:

“The inquiry was met with stunned awkwardness, according to three people who recounted details from the private session in Midtown Manhattan. The staff of “60 Minutes,” the nation’s most-watched news program, view their coverage as firmly nonpartisan and reject criticism from President Trump and his allies who argue that it has a liberal slant.”

60 Minutes is fairly centrist and tame. But it’s the same old trick: if you say things Republicans or corporate power don’t like, you’ll be branded as foundationally untrustworthy. That, more than anything, results in a broader public distrust in U.S. journalism, which the modern, corporatist, brunchlord, far right alliance then exploits and insists can only be fixed by pushing news coverage even further to the right.

Neat trick, right?

It’s worth reiterating that Weiss has no experience in real journalism. She doesn’t own a television. Her tenure at the New York Times involved writing a few opinion columns and helping to turn the New York Times’ op-ed section into a rightward-lurching contrarian troll farm. She’s been hired to turn CBS into the same thing, with the help of a Trump-appointed right wing “ombudsman” providing a fake veneer of authority with some feigned furrowed-brow seriousness.

The goal isn’t objective journalism, it’s to help center-right billionaires further put their thumb on the scale of the consensus definition of objective journalism, shoveling us deeper down the rabbit hole of an anti-democratic state run by the whims of our richest sociopaths. And while it’s only been a week or two, Weiss’ goal here is really not subtle, especially as it pertains to validating Netanyahu:

“As a Middle East peace deal came into view, Ms. Weiss shared numerous pro-Israel opinion pieces from The Free Press, and an editorial that said Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, had failed ‘the Hamas test.'”

If you want to remain employed in a highly consolidated U.S. journalism industry owned by rich oligarchs, you’re supposed to pretend none of this is happening, or that it’s perfectly normal to put a right wing troll with no journalism experience in charge of one of the nation’s biggest news operations. At worst, you might be allowed by your editors to hint that Weiss is “controversial” and “unconventional.”

But make no mistake: Weiss is being used as a prop by the billionaire Ellison family to encourage U.S. media’s steady lurch rightward as a necessary anti-woke corrective to mainstream media’s non-existent liberal bias. The primary goal is to undermine the kind of academics, progressive reformers, scientists and marginalized communities that actually speak truth to consolidated wealth and power.

Our broken, consolidated, billionaire-owned press can’t really explain any of this clearly to the public, so you get a bunch of hollow, weird, feckless coverage of what Weiss is up to that largely frames her as a good faith outspoken critic of the very media rot she’s long helped to perpetuate.

You’d like to think, at some point, the American media and public could awake from this generational con. But the only way to truly fix the U.S. media’s real bias is to untether it from consolidated billionaire ownership and the distorted incentives created by advertising engagement. But because that’s going to make billionaires less money and result in real journalism, it’s always deemed a bridge too far.

Bridge too far…

Karl, as the youths say, “let’s keep it real”. Any Bridge, media related or not, is too far for the Billionaire class. Brunchlords don’t do infrastructure (the figurative educational norm and consensus building or the literal physical construction of public utility). Now a suite of generative AI products aimed at creating inspired matcha permutations based on the collective mood…that’s in their wheelhouse. And if you act now … I can get you in on the ground floor.

Re:

It’s obvious many people are upset that they did not get Bari Weiss’ job. Jealousy is ugly.

Aside from the uncited accusations of antisemitism, this is a really odd claim. How many people do you think applied for that position? Why would you think the criticism would all be due to not getting that particular position?

It’s been running strong since 1620, when the Pilgrims landed in their search for religious freedom (to take away others’ religious freedom.) Anyone else remember “Swift Vets and POWs for Truth?” We’ve been post-truth for over 20 years now, in service of the same.

Re:

I’d argue the contrary. Post-truth implies a rejection of an objective existence of truth. For post-truth to be a thing, it would mean the denial of object permanence.

One way to test this is to ask if gravity is true. For a person who says no, invite them to the edge of the roof of a tall building. If you have to “believe” in gravity in order for it to be true, you can walk off the ledge and not go splat. Right? RIGHT?!

Lol, no. CBS, like most MSM, is very left wing. 60 minutes, in particular, has been caught making egregious breaches of ethics attempting to make democrat politicians look good and republicans look bad.

Bar Weiss is center left. I actually don’t agree with her on a lot of things but she at least journalistic integrity and is not insane.

If you think Bari Weiss is right wing you are fuucking insane and have lost the plot.

Re: Re: Mmm ... pudding

I best remember Bari Weiss for an exchange she had with Jane Coaston on Twitter. It’s known for coining the phrase “amoral pudding.”

I can’t log on to X so I can no longer post the full exchange but I had it hear on BestNetTech two years ago:

Weiss: When conservatives, classical liberals or libertarians are told by the progressive chattering class that they–or those they read–are alt-right, the very common response is to say: Screw it. They think everyone is alt-right. And then those people move further right.

Coaston: Again, if you move further right because someone on Twitter said something you don’t like, you were always going to move further right.

Also, again, if you join the alt-right BECAUSE OF A VANITY FAIR ARTICLE, you were already on your way there.

Weiss: I’m talking here about an emotional response. What happens to you when you are called deplorable? Is the response to say to the accuser: Actually, hey, you’re right! I hadn’t realized that about myself. Or is it to maybe consider voting for Trump?

Coaston: Bari, perhaps the issue here is that this hypothetical person is made out of amoral pudding.

Weiss: I’m not sure what amoral pudding is. I’m talking about every Trump voter I know.

Coaston: Amoral pudding is who you are when your reasonings behind not great decisions are all based on your feelings being hurt.

Re:

Anyone who has followed what Bari actually does and writes and thinks she’s “center left” has no idea what “center” or “left” means.

John Oliver broke it down nicely: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gieTx_P6INQ

I’m sure you’ll just insult him as some woke hack, but the thing you will never actually do is address the many points he raised, just like you never address the actual points Mike raises.

It’s almost like you can’t.

So first, no mainstream media is left. They’re all corporate and corporate isn’t left. Corporate is centrist at best. A lot of it is center-right while virtue signaling semi-progressive ideas a very small amount of the time, and typically only if the marketing department has done some research to see how that will play out.

The further left you go the closer you get to socialism and seizing the means of production for the workers. No large capitalist corporation is within even a million miles of that. None of them are advocating for that.

Second, the Democrats collectively are not left either. About the furthest left you get at the national level for elected officials is AOC and Bernie Sanders. And they are nominally democratic socialists, but their stated positions would usually make them social democrats, which is closer to center than democratic socialists. Specifically, they tend to advocate for social programs under the framework of a democratic capitalist society.

But even if those things/people were actually left and even if your assertions were true, making Democrats look good isn’t itself a useful measure of ideological alignment. If that’s all you can pull out of your ass, you aren’t familiar with Weiss enough to make a useful claim.

If you think Bari Weiss is right wing you are fuucking insane and have lost the plot.

If you think she’s not right wing, it means that you’re so far right that Reagan looks like a communist to you.

This is what happens when you eschew education and just freebase your gut feeling as good enough for your understanding. But hey, Trump loves the uneducated, so you’re right at home.
