A Look Into What Advertisers Elon’s Twitter Has In Its Future

from the brand-safety? dept

We were just talking about how Twitter’s ad revenue woes may be even worse than previously expected. Earlier reports had suggested that ad revenue was down 40% as many of the biggest advertisers had abandoned ship in the name of protecting their own brand safety. But the more recent report said that advertising was actually down over 70% in December. We also noted that many of the remaining bigger name advertisers are on long-term deals that were signed before Musk took over, which raises questions about whether or not they’ll renew, as Musk’s “content moderation” ideas seem to be mainly around punishing people he doesn’t like, bringing back literal Nazis, and allowing the infamous Russian mercenary paramilitary org Wagner Group PMC to recruit Americans to fight against Ukraine.

This is why Twitter is begging advertisers to come back, and offering a $250k ad match for companies willing to purchase $250k worth of advertising.

Of course, with all that going on, I’ve highlighted in the past that the quality of Twitter’s advertising has dropped precipitously (even as the number of ads has gone up by a ridiculous amount — I think I see a promoted tweet every four or five tweets now).

Either way, last week, the NY Times had an article about the kind of advertising found on Truth Social. You remember Truth Social, right? It’s the social network Donald Trump “started” which promised to take down basically the entire entertainment industry, starting with a Twitter competitor, but then eventually Facebook, Netflix, Disney, CNN, and even cloud services like AWS and Google Cloud?

If you want to know how that’s going, remember, reports are that Trump is now plotting how to get out of the contract he has with the company, so he can return to Twitter.

Anyway, the advertisements there seem… well… read for yourself:

Between posts about conspiracy theories and right-wing grievances was an unusual advertisement: a photo of former President Donald J. Trump holding a $1,000 bill made of gold, which he was apparently offering free to supporters.

But there were a few catches: The bill was not free, it was not made of gold, and it was not offered by Mr. Trump.

The ad appeared on Truth Social, the right-wing social network started by Mr. Trump in late 2021, one of many pitches from hucksters and fringe marketers dominating the ads on the site.

Ads from major brands are nonexistent on the site. Instead, the ads on Truth Social are for alternative medicine, diet pills, gun accessories and Trump-themed trinkets, according to an analysis of hundreds of ads on the social network by The New York Times.

Even Trump’s biggest fans are not particularly thrilled with the ad quality on the site:

Over time, the low-quality ads on Truth Social have irritated its own users, who have complained to Mr. Trump after repeatedly seeing the same disturbing images or after falling for misleading gimmicks.

“Can you not vet the ads on Truth?” asked one user in a post directed at Mr. Trump. “I’ve been scammed more than once.”

The Times’ piece has tons of screenshots of ads including the fact that “Most of the ads from Truth Social reviewed by The Times used images designed to catch a user’s attention, like grotesque eyeballs and skin abnormalities, typically selling alternative medicines and miracle cures.” I’m not going to show you the screenshot of those (go look, if you dare) because I’m not that mean to our community here. But, the ad quality is, well, lacking:

Anyway, if Elon keeps on Musking up Twitter, it won’t be surprising to see the ad quality heading in a similar direction…

An inability to learn seems right on point

“Can you not vet the ads on Truth?” asked one user in a post directed at Mr. Trump. “I’ve been scammed more than once.”

You are on the “Truth” website, have been scammed multiple times, and you are still there wondering what is going on. It is a beautiful thing when someone finds the perfect place where they belong. It would not surprise me to find out this person is on Truth.social because they are mad at the world and cannot understand why things seem to be stacked against them.

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

Or to put it differently this person is precisely the type of rube that Trump and the modern GOP look for, so easily fooled that that it takes no effort in manipulating them to go against their own interests.

Fixing a papercut by chopping the arm off

The real kicker is that if he does get that desperate it’s likely to just make the problem worse as any current advertisers that aren’t locked in by contract aren’t likely to want to have their ads next to ones like those, making the decision a possible short-term gain and guaranteed long-term loss.

Thankfully for Twitter and all of it’s current users it’s not like Musk is known to make stupid short-sighted decisions for money, so I doubt they’ll have to worry about dealing with ads like that any time soon.

"Vet the ads"

“Can you not vet the ads on Truth?” asked one user in a post directed at Mr. Trump. “I’ve been scammed more than once.”

So the expectation is that Truth Social is supposed to vet those content providers that pay it while leaving the rest alone.

In contrast, Twitters pink slip, pardon, blue checkmark program intends to not vet those content providers that pay it.

Those expectations may be diametrically opposed, but somehow either seems headed towards a train wreck.

I can’t wait to receive my official Elon Musk Emerald. They told me they’re having some “labor” problems right now, but it should be heading off to me in just a few weeks. Had to give them like three different credit cards before we just gave up and I sent the money via Western Union, but it’s worth it. Those emeralds are going to be worth more than diamonds one day.

“No,” replied Donald Trump, “Vetting our advertisers would be censorship like those dastardly libs and big tech so we can’t have any quality control, now shut up, buy your cold coloured metal slabs and eat your prepper bucket slop like a good suckeeerrepublican.”

I was wondering if we were going to get a dumb post by Masnick about Musk today

And we do! This one is even dumber than usual…you had no actual news about Twitter, so you posted how Truth Social had right-leaning advertising you don’t like….therefore Twitter will too? WTF?

P.S. Random racists are not “literal Nazis”, you fucking dumbass, the word has a meaning.

P.S.S. Actual racists (not just whatever liberal nuts call a “racist”) should have free speech rights too.

Again, you people love to admit that you want to be able to call people ni&&ers online and feel that you shouldn’t face any consequences for it.

Those consequences are simply getting the ban hammer, and that seems too much for you fragile snowflakes to handle and you therefore complain that your feelz have been hurt and starting whining and crying about it.

Much like you do here daily… you love to come whining and crying that Mike is hurting your feelz by writing articles that are critical of your idol Musk (and Trump).

Ironic.

I prefer “N-word”, and oh no. I want free speech. Which means, explicitly, people saying things I don’t like. Including rappers, funny enough.

Those consequences are simply getting the ban hammer

They are not. The consequences are having a voice in the public square. You god damned fucking moron.

Re: Re:

Not allowing some racist to say racist things does not stop them from being racist.
What it does do is force them to hide the fact they are racist and makes it harder for them to find other like minded individuals.

Not sure which is worse:
Knowing who the racist are and the crap they say.
vs
Not knowing who the racists are and what they think about you.

HotHead says:

Re: Re: Re: The crux of the issue is that moderation

Not allowing some racist to say racist things does not stop them from being racist.

You have to draw a line somewhere, unless you intend to completely avoid moderating racism. Everyone draws a different line. Every social media site draws its own line. That’s freedom of speech, since moderation is speech. That’s what the First Amendment promotes.

Not sure which is worse:
Knowing who the racist are and the crap they say.
vs
Not knowing who the racists are and what they think about you.

Racist internet users aren’t trying to hide from being seen, even when they hide behind codewords. They want to force large social media sites to host their speech. And you know what would be worse than either option in the dichotomy you proposed? Letting a government force a social media site to host someone’s speech. People like Matthew Bennett want the third option.

Re: Re:

The link provided was to an actual Nazi

No, no it really wasn’t, you god damned fucking moron, cuz no one founding the Daily Stormer was part of National Socialist German Workers’ Party, they are nearly all dead.

Words have meanings, and this is all the more important with liberal retards calling anyone they disagree with a “nazi”. You can’t just call what is colloquially referred to as a “neo-nazi” (already an ambiguous and flexible definition) an “literal nazi” an expect people to take you seriously. Which granted I wasn’t already but Masnick absolutely derserves shame for using such hyperbole.

You must not have had your medication today, because that’s even more moronic than usual.
By the same logic, calling someone a fascist is wrong if they weren’t part of Mussolini’s party after WW1.

Someone who subscribes to the ideology of nazism is a nazi, neo or otherwise.

And you can’t get all keyboard-smashy about people calling Anglin a Nazi without sounding like you’re personally offended by the accusation. It’s a weird thing to rant about.

Re: Re:

You are too stupid to realize “free speech” is a concept separate from the 1A.

Fuck damn. Every time, there’s some idiot who doesn’t realize that the 1A bans censorship by government, not that it’s only censorship if the government was involved. (but they were! So glad we don’t have to argue about that)

Re: Re: Re:

You’re too fucking stupid to realize that in the US, free speech is defined by the 1st amendment and is a check on government power over its citizenry.

Your “belief” of what free speech means to you has fuck all to do with how private businesses can run their company… using their 1st Amendment given free speech protections.

Those protections allow social media sites to tell people like you to fuck off somewhere else and guess what, there is not A GOD DAMNED THING you can do about it, even if that doesn’t “fit” within your “beliefs”.

Your “beliefs” on what free speech “should be” mean absolutely nothing beyond the 1st amendment you fucking idiot.

So chew on that you racist fucking piece of shit.

Re:

Re: “P.S.S. Actual racists (not just whatever liberal nuts call a “racist”) should have free speech rights too”

Mr Bennett. You are absolutely right. Actual racists should have free speech right, and they do. What they also have are CONSQUENCES.

Anyone is free to say anything in America (sans incitement) but most people censor themselves out of fear of the consequences. You might really want to tell the boss that they are an f*ing idiot but you don’t bc you know you will get fired. One might have the “Freedom” to shoot people on 5th Avenue, but that would land a person in prison.

The same goes for social media sites. They have a product to sell (be it Twitter, Facebook, etc) and they want it to be a vibrant and engaging platform so that users want to engage and post. When “actual racists” post, the 99.99% of non racists recoil and disengage which is bad for business. They (Big Tech) realize that content created by actual racists is bad for their bottom line, so it is removed.

That is what as known as the free market (which my former party used to love). Ideas are generated, tested in the marketplace by the consumer, and accepted or rejected based on popularity/demand. The current market is not accepting of Naziism, homophobia, sexism, racism, and xenophobia.

If Musk follows his current trajectory of giving “actual racists ” a platform on Twitter, then the consumer will see that he is relegated to the dustbin w MySpace.

It’s not a plot. It’s not wokism. It’s free market economics which is why TS, 4Chan, and Telegram exist. They are comfortable with that business model.

It does seem as if every country in the world is lurching ever closer to authoritarian capitalism, a pervasive surveilance state, and a growing, violent “right wing” (read: Nazi ideology and its related ethnostate bullshit) if the state isn’t already rabidly “right wing” already.

Unless Matthew Bennett would like to enlighten us as to how the rest of the world is not as free as the standard America set…?

Many countries in the world are rejecting woke ideology, and electing governments who will work to stop it. So they will not accept that men can become women, nor that male rapists should be incarcerated in women’s prisons if they claim they are women. They will not accept that they should accept millions of migrants who will turn around and becime a permanent, dangerous underclass who will steal from, rape, and murder them. They will not accept being lectured to by remote world-government wannabes who impose policy without considering consequences.

How large is the US prison population compared to other Western nations again? America values profit over freedom, but you don’t care as it disproportionately affects minorities.

Actually, I think the intent was that it disproportionately affect minorities. The standard example is crack v. powder cocaine, but such intent will frequently be found in ``law and order” platforms.

Re: Re:

Oh but that’s the fun part, they still do, it’s just free speech does not and never has been shorthand for consequence-free speech or included a guarantee of a platform to speak from and other people are using their free speech rights to tell them to bugger off.

It’s another case of ‘even if they were right they’d still be wrong’.

right-leaning advertising you don’t like

You mean ads by scammers targeting gullible ‘right-leaning’ suckers? I LOVE them! Anything that separates you simpleton dumbfucks from your money is fantastic, as far as I’m concerned.

It’s one helluva accomplishment to not only scam you dipshits, but to get you to defend the scam as well. They sure found some next-level stupid with you people.

HotHead says:

Re:

so you posted how Truth Social had right-leaning advertising you don’t like….therefore Twitter will too?

Matthew Bennett, you must be allergic to reality, unless you meant to imply that the literal fraud and false advertising Mike put on display in the article is a benefit to “right-leaning” users of Truth Social. The “right-leaning” folks you keep referring to are falling to scams on Trump’s platform (which he doesn’t like anymore or never liked, but I digress). Even if Mike turns out to be wrong in his prediction that similar scammers will invade Musk’s Twitter, Mike might as well be giving Musk a friendly warning. Go ahead, keep your angry red glasses on and keep converting Mike’s constructive criticism and warnings into Mike’s supposed hatred of Musk. But surely you aren’t wilfully ignoring Musk’s attempts to attract “right-leaning” users. Scammers may well decide to follow the wallets who follow Trump.

It always amuses me how insistent some people are that ‘free speech’ is shorthand for consequence-free speech and that the right to speak includes a right to a platform or location of their choice to speak from.

Re: Re:

It always amuses me how woke ideologues cloak their desire for censorship in the legalism of the 1st Amendment and the outsourcing of censorship to private entities not bound by it but benefiting from it.

Not silencing speech based on viewpoint does not render that speech consequence-free. The opposite, of course, since not silencing speech opens it up to argument. Woke ideologues seek to silence speech which they hate but that is widely popular, precisely because such speakers do not suffer consequences for their widely-shared opinions.

Private entities may legally censor speech as they wish and no one has the right to speak on those platforms against the will of the owners. But in a society that has freedom of speech as a foundational value, large generic speech platforms should not silence opinions based on their viewpoints, and if they do, they should be encouraged, shamed, or bought to get them to change.

It always amuses me how RWNJ’s latch on to meaningless phrases like this a use them obsessively as if they think it’s a witty insult. The two words literally contradict each other. It’s beyond stupid to think you’re getting anything more than eye-rolls from using it.

Private entities may legally censor speech as they wish and no one has the right to speak on those platforms against the will of the owners. But in a society that has freedom of speech as a foundational value, large generic speech platforms should not silence opinions based on their viewpoints…

Despite this claim being made ad nauseum, scant actual evidence has ever been offered to prove this is the main motivation for large platforms. It’s not “conservatives” that get kicked off, it’s assholes. No company wants to deal with lots of assholes. More assholes = less advertisers = less money. It’s painfully simple capitalism.

Re: Re: Re:3

It is a witty insult. A sports broadcaster misheard a crowd chanting “F— you, Biden” as “Let’s go, Brandon” and talked about that on air. That caught people’s attention, and then became a jokey way to insult the president while bypassing profanity filters. Which then led to the counter meme of “Dark Brandon”, a version of the president with superpowers who defeats Republicans with ease.

It’s all quite wonderful, illustrating both how creative people are with language and how useless it is to try to moderate away opinions you hate. Speakers will always get ahead of would-be censors.

They were vetted. Once by US Pravda making sure the funds were cleared, and once by the advertiser knowing that they were targeting the dumbest, most easily led group of people to ever empty their wallets for a con artist. If you’re expecting Trump and his lackeys to be on the side of the mark and not the grifter, you really need to re-examine what you voted for in recent years, and adjust accordingly.
